There are some days I am what one would call a “hot mess”. On these days, I am running around like a mad woman. The tasks and chores on my to do list are overwhelming. The phone buzzing and ringing is making me even more spastic. I start putting pressure on myself to answer each text message in record time. I’m distracted, rushed, and truly not enjoying any part of this beautiful day the Lord has blessed me with. By the end of the day, I feel exhausted, unfulfilled, and feel like I just wasted a precious day.
To avoid a day like this, the most important tip I have discovered is to wake up early before my babies have woken up. During this time, I spend time reading the bible, spiritual books, and journaling. When I first started this practice, it was very hard for me to get myself out of bed, especially since I had three small kids, I felt like I was in a constant state of exhaustion! I had the misconception that if I got that extra hour of sleep and my day started immediately, I would feel more energized. I have come to found out it is quite the opposite. The days that I wake up an hour earlier to pray and meditate with the Lord, I have markedly more energy and enthusiasm throughout my day. Now that I have made it a routine, I can’t go a day without it! My heart leaps for joy when my alarm clock goes off because I know this is time that I can rest in the Lord and find peace and joy for my upcoming day. This time with the Lord truly makes me a better wife and mother. But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary; they will walk and not be faint (Isiah 40:31).
After a beautiful morning with the Lord, once the day begins, I sometimes get lost in the chaos of life again. When this happens, I’ll remind my mind to pay attention to my five senses. I’ll take the time to soak in the soft, cool touch of the green grass on a summer day, a warm embrace from my husband, or even smile at the sound of the washer that never seems to stop. When my mind is activated to these everyday experiences and blessings, it helps me to slow down and appreciate the simple joys of everyday.
There is so much goodness we are missing out of in a constant state of hurrying. Reserve time in the early morning to nourish your mind, heart, and soul in the comfort of peace and quiet with the Lord. Your days will suddenly be more efficient, your energy vibrant, and your mind clear. It’s amazing what the Lord does to bless his loved ones that spend time with him.
